During Phase 1 of Strong Start’s building campaign, we’re raising money to secure the perimeter of the property, perform maintenance on the road leading to and from the site, and elaborate Strong Start’s first program center, the Center for Prenatal Care.

For every 261 children born in Haiti, one woman dies as a result of pregnancy-related causes. The first priority of Strong Start is to increase access to high quality prenatal care with the goal of making pregnancy a safer and more supported experience for the poorest and most at-risk women. Through the prenatal care center we will deliver high quality prenatal care aimed at reducing the risk of fetal death and pregnancy complications, while improving women’s experience of pregnancy, and promoting a positive transition into childbirth and motherhood.

The prenatal building will have a waiting area that can seat 120 people and four consultation rooms that will be used for new patient exams, routine prenatal care and monitoring, nutrition counseling and support, and additional services such as STI testing and treatment and counseling for women who are experiencing intimate partner violence.

Women will visit the prenatal care center at least 8 times while pregnant. Each visit will be an opportunity for our care providers to detect and manage potential complications, which translates to more lives saved and fewer families torn apart by tragedy. Our group prenatal care model will give women a chance to build relationships both with our midwives and educators and with other women who are walking through a similar stage of life. At the prenatal center women will learn how to stay healthy during pregnancy, how to recognize life-threatening complications, and how to give their babies a strong start to life.

Regardless of socioeconomic status, we want women to feel supported and powerful throughout pregnancy, and give birth to healthy children. The Center for Prenatal Care is where it starts.

What your ‘Phase 1’ gifts make possible:

  • Improved access to high-quality prenatal care and education
  • Early detection and prompt referral for women experiencing complications
